  *** CREATING THE MANE ***

1. Change your background color to #ED942C

2. Click on your Preset Shapes tool  and choose Dodecagon. (I'm using the dodecagon, because it already has a lot of nodes and will save some time when we are adding nodes.)

3. Draw a dodecagon in the approximate area of your head:

4. Click on your Object Selector tool and click on Node Edit in your Tool Options box.

5. Add new nodes by holding down your Ctrl key and clicking on your ellipse.  I started by adding a new node between each of the existing nodes.

6. Double click on any one of your nodes to select all.  Right click on one node and choose Node Type/Symmetric. Right click again and choose Node Type/Cusp.

Each time you add a node remember to double click on one of your nodes to select all; then right click any of your nodes and choose Node Type/Symmetric; then Node Type/Cusp from the fly-out menu.

6. We want our shape to be similar to the one below, so add as many nodes as needed:

7. Rename this shape "mane".

8. Change your foreground color to black and your background color to null.

9. Click on Draw Tool and use the following settings:

10. Draw some lines to add detail to your mane:

11. Rather than rename all these freehand lines, lets group them and call our group "mane details".  Left click on one of your new shapes (freehand lines) and while holding down your shift key click on all of the other lines.  Right click on any of these lines in your layer palette and choose Group from the fly-out menu. Rename "Group1" to "mane details":

1. Change your background color to black.

2. Click on your Preset Shapes tool  and choose Ellipse.

3. Draw three small circles on each cheek for some freckles.

4. Rather than rename these six ellipses, lets group them and call our group "freckles".  Left click on one of your new shapes (ellipse) and while holding down your shift key click on each of the other five ellipses.  Right click on any of these five shapes in your layer palette and choose Group from the fly-out menu. Rename "Group1" to "freckles":

5. Draw two small circles for your eyes.

  *** CREATING THE HEART ***

1. Change your background color to #EE4B4B.

2. Click on your Preset Shapes tool  and choose Heart 1.

3. Draw a heart in the center of your canvas.  We want the heart to appear like the lion is holding it in his arms, so you will need to resize and reshape:

We're finished creating our basic lion, but it needs some adjustments and fine tuning.  We'll take care of these in the next part of the tutorial.
